Basic Train-ing
Parts: ~7092Build time: ~40 hours
The Japanese word for train. The kanji are built up using plates and tiles, each has about 650 elements and weight around 0.8kg. The background is made up of 8 different types of train in different colours. The whole thing weighs about 9kg (about 2 cats).
I designed it entirely in Studio first, then ordered the parts. I didn't realise just how unwieldy it would be until it was finished. The biggest issue is flex. Using the 16x16 technic bricks makes it nice and easy to build, theoretically it shouldn't need support like it would if it was built on regular base plates, it isn't all sunshine and roses. The 64x64 mosaics have a problem with flexing when moved, any plates place across the joins have a tendency to come loose, or even fly off. Annoying, given I put them like that to add strength. With this one being twice as big it is much worse. I have added a board to the back to stop it falling to pieces everytime I touch it. Sadly, doing so means it now has to travel as one piece, I can't break it down like the others. Anyway, let's see how it goes.
